Restored Illustration
Illustration of the John Laird and Sons Shipyard Prior to Restoration
Like many of the images that I received related to the CSS Alabama this illustration had a green tint. In order to prepare this for future use on the museum website I first removed the color through desaturation. I used a combination of levels adjustment and curves to significantly increase the contrast. I used Photoshop's unsharp mask to tighten up the focus without creating a halo effect around objects in the image. One particularly bad area near the middle and bottom that appears as a black splotch required me to create a separate layer. Once I had that area isolated I was able to adjust the levels and restore some contrast. I'm still unsure what is depicted in that area but it is less of a distraction than it is in the original. This image was a warm for the next restoration which was in significantly worse shape.
